Appalachian Mountain Dancing Dolls
Several years ago we began a small cottage workshop, first in colonial Virginia and then here in New York, producing the Appalachian Mountain Dancing Dolls of the past.  These dolls were a folk tradition among the simple people of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Seen both in social gatherings and also in the home, these primitive 'toys' were enjoyed by all.  Perhaps it was on chilly fall or winter evenings or in front of the old stone fireplaces that as the music of the banjo, guitar and harmonicas were played these dolls danced on their paddles and platforms to the beat of the familiar 'bluegrass' tunes to the amusement of many a child... as well as adult!

Everyone has been delighted by their animations and gyrations for many generations!  It is our desire that our dolls will bring a chuckle to your heart and a smile on your face as you both watch and hold them in your hands.

Our dolls, painted as both black and white figurines, are authentic reproductions of the originals of that era with a few being 'take-offs' of other period toys of the mountains folk.  Each is hand crafted of native poplar and/or oak with brass or copper pins at the arm and leg joints to assist in their dancing movements.  We hand paint each one according to the pattern colors and patina of the originals.  This way each doll looks as if it were an antique original!  All are initialed, numbered and marked with the HighlanderGlory insignia both on the enclosed card and on the bottom of the paddle or platform.
